Bilateral relationship Norway Argentina

Currently, the most important chapter in the bilateral relationship is the presence of major Norwegian companies carrying out direct investment activities in Argentina.

As of 2024, some negative trends in Norway’s investment flow to Argentina have begun to reverse. During this period, no Norwegian company left the country. On the contrary, GOLAR became the first foreign company to take a leading role in an ongoing LNG liquefaction and export project (USD 15 billion, in partnership with PAE, YPF, and other companies).

Equinor announced its decision to continue operating in the country. Yara resolved the conflict regarding access for its products to the Port of Quequén. The Argentine fishing company Estremar—owned by Norwegian capital—completed the renewal of the firm’s largest vessel (USD 40 million). The corporate software company Visma acquired three Argentine startups. Hydro, a global leader in aluminum production, operates a plant with 125 employees in Pilar; and all Norwegian business leaders agree that Argentina’s business environment has undergone a decisive and positive shift since December 2023.

The bilateral trade relationship between Argentina and Norway has so far been characterized by the export of agro‑industrial products (beef, wine, peanuts, and fish) and the import of high value‑added Norwegian inputs such as fertilizers, specialized machinery for the chemical industry, and technology for the energy and hydrocarbons sectors. Argentina represents a market with great potential for sustainable investment.

Relations with Argentina have gained new momentum following the signing of the Free Trade Agreement between MERCOSUR and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) in September 2025, aimed at eliminating tariffs on most products and industrial goods.
